Melbourne: Day 5

We started out today slightly later after our full on excursion to Melbourne. A relaxed breakfast and I was journalling away when suddenly James had taken a unit outside and was sawing away.

I had underestimated how much he had missed DIY

Alas, all was well as after offering to take on a quick task for Gary, he was helping the family out with making two things at once, adapting a unit, and installing a new custom shelf.

Such concentration; I’m sure my photo taking wasn’t distracting at all…

After admiring James’ new handiwork for a time we concocted a plan for the afternoon, we would walk to a recommended gallery where we would meet up with everyone and go for lunch.

The photos may show just how indecisive the weather was today, but luckily when we left there were beautiful blue skies.

Oh dear the blue skies gone, here’s a lovely building though

Soon enough we arrived at Boom Gallery and were eager to have a look round.

Surprise! This gallery was open!

Boom Gallery is another in the long list of great spaces in Geelong

There were a few exhibitions on, most of which were print based which immediately peaked my already high interest.

I particularly enjoyed Sue Grossman’s work

I do enjoy a well executed relief print, and Sue Grossman’s kaleidoscopic prints were beautiful.

James enjoyed Ellie Malin’s colourful woodcuts

James liked the use of material in Ellie Malin’s work, the wood grain shining through from the plates added texture.

Tucked round a corner was a treasure trove of works by various artists.

Contemplating all artsy style
If only we had a wall to put these on!

The coffee shop was also a hit with James and we had just enough time to grab one to go before meeting everyone for lunch.

We had suggested going to Little Creatures BreweryΒ for lunch as their “brewery village” is an awesome spot with great beer and great food.

I’d have to agree with Little Creatures: this place is like Willy Wonka’s but for beer

We met up with Annette’s parents, Anne and Dave who, like the whole family, are just so lovely! (It must be in the genes)

Some people chat and acknowledge loved ones presence, others get straight to the menu

We had a lovely catch up with everyone over some great food.

Not sure about this guac to chip ratio

The beloved hummus and falafel is always a winner for us.

We also had some great beer (the main event really) but it seemed to have gone down so well there’s no photographic evidence of it.

After we had finished lunch we decided to explore a little more of the brewery wonderland before working lunch off by walking back to the house.

We even found a piano in a container and James jumped straight back into his virtuoso ways
He can even make an out of tune piano sound good
Another brewery on the complex, White Rabbit also offers tasty beer and a sneak peak into their practice

Our walk home was peppered with rain and shine but the riverside stroll was thoroughly enjoyable.

By order of the river department: one must Have A Nice Day

We spent the rest of the evening, once again, by the fire. The weather had decided to become rather unfriendly in the evening so sitting by the fire, glass of wine in hand was a lovely way to top off the day. We also got to watch our first game of Aussie Rules Footie which was actually pretty entertaining and even more enjoyable once we’d realised which team we were collectively backing (Go Cats?!)

  1. What an amazing place. The whole atmosphere looks incredibly up beat and vibrant. I really really want to go there 😜😜xx

  2. “Have a nice day. Beware of snakes” sounds like a sensible message. Great to see James tinkling the old ivories with such ease and enjoying some woodwork too! A fantastic time with the family in lovely surrounds:) Log burner on here too this weekend !
