Byron Bay: Day 2

Today I went to see Frank.

On route to Shackpalace Rituals!

Frank Macchia is a designer who has an Architecture practice in Noosa, and has recently moved to Byron Bay and started a new venture called Shackpalace.

I was introduced to Frank by Gary, who we had recently stayed with in Geelong. Frank kindly invited me along to see their new space in a bustling industrial estate a quick stroll to the North of Byron Bay.

This industrial estate, like many across the country, had seen a shift away from pure industry and now accommodates a wide range of startup and established businesses.

Frank gave me a quick tour of their new space, labelled as Shackpalace Rituals, before discussing his past, present and future projects. He has an impressive portfolio. It was fantastic to have a conversation with someone with so much ingenuity and dedication to the Architectural profession.

After what seemed like a very quick couple of hours with Frank, I headed back into town to meet up with Hatti who had been busy exploring and scouting out good spots to return to in the afternoon.

H. scouting out locations…

First on the list was Fisherman’s Lookout a short walk along the beach from the main esplanade at Byron Bay.

Fisherman’s Lookout, a small outcrop that presumably gets marooned in high tide!
The views were spectacular, the sun glistening across the ocean.
Hatti reaching the top of the climb!
Interacting with the walkway as prescribed.
A glimpse of the coastline to the South of Cape of Byron.
The weathering on the decking was superb!
Nice treatment of a difficult junction in the handrail!

After we’d soaked in all we could of the views, with our sponge-like eyes, we wandered back along the beach as the sun began to set.

The remains of Angkor Watt, model scaled to 1:1000.
Looking back toward Byron from the foot of the lookout!
The setting sun cast incredible shadows across the well trafficked sand.
We reached town just in time to see the sun setting.
We treated ourselves to a pasta dish, with a side of organic wine!

See you all tomorrow, when we’re off to Surfers Paradise.
