Byron Bay: Day 1

After our 12 hour bus journey from Sydney and with very little what can loosely be called: sleep, we arrived in Byron Bay bright and early. About 6:30am to be exact.

We were early for our 2pm check in to the hostel so we dropped our bags and went straight to the beach. Our hostel is very close to the beach and right in the centre of the town which is excellent for us whilst exploring.

Good morning Byron Bay!
A cold shower definitely woke James up a bit!

The beach was already fairly busy at this early hour with dog walkers (which means dogs, yay!) surfers and a few early morning exercises.

After spending some time on the beach and the sun had properly risen we were in the mood for some breakfast, we decided to treat ourselves to some avo toast from Twisted Sista and proper tea and coffee!

Refuelled we explored further round the area, through the town and then onto the lighthouse which is a lovely scenic walk from the town and provides excellent views too.

Do we count as wildlife?

We spent some time up here just taking our surroundings in when we were surprised by a special guest who seemed slightly less impressed with the view!

Wallaby!
Wallaby has a baby!

This lighthouse is on the most easterly outcrop on the Australian mainland, there was a walkway for those keen to venture further which allowed us to go further east to a lookout where, during the winter months, humpback whales can be seen migrating to warmer waters to have their babies!

And to the East we have…nothing but ocean…
That’s the end of Australia to the east

Unfortunately we saw no whales but we did spot some kayakers who were being thoroughly entertained by some dolphins.

Not sure who’s having more fun though; the people or the dolphins?!
James mocked up a visual of what a whale may have looked like

Following our general philosophy of taking a loop or the long route, we decided to walk a slightly different way back towards the town. Along walkways through the bush and then down onto the beach for our last stretch, it was a slightly quieter route with more opportunity to see wildlife.

Not exhausted enough from 30hours of no sleep, James suggested we do some sprints on the large empty stretch of beach before us. Apparently the Aussie workout ethics are rubbing off on us!

James told me there was chocolate at the end of the beach

This did a very good job of depleting the last of our energy and so we had a quick lunch picnic on the beach before it was finally time for us to check into our hostel!

We went straight to the showers and a quick nap before heading to a local supermarket to grab some dinner supplies and make the most of the kitchen facilities available.

The street our hostel is on is pretty darn cool

Another quick walk in the evening to work off dinner and it was truly time for bed, asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillows, we were out for the count resting up for a new day tomorrow.

  1. Awwww the wallaby is gorgeous. James mock up of the whale is hilarious ! I could imagine the people on the yacht having very brown underwear, if a whale ‘that’ size appeared next to them!
Byron Bay is stunning. Have a wonderful time.
Watch out for oversized whales ! 😂 Xx
