Hong Kong: Day 1

After last night’s slight detour we got up and checked out of our hotel around midday (another shout out to Shamrock Hotel for saving our skins) and headed straight to our new home for the next 5 nights on Hong Kong Island.

The undergrounds and trams here are pretty efficient and cheap, and the trams in particular are a good way to see bits of the city as you jerk through.

Not all trams have camera crews hanging out of the top deck

As soon as we’d gotten ourselves re-situated we headed out to properly explore the city for the first time.

Picture of the city

Hong Kong seems completely different by day than by night and it’ll be fun to explore more of both, although it’ll inevitably lead to more being lost, which has become more of a comfortable norm for us anyway.

Speaking of which we also managed to find some green spaces amongst the hustle and bustle.

Green – complete with man practicing Tai Chi

The markets and small shops are a sight in themselves and we could spend so much time going round them and still not see everything.

They’re like Aladdin’s Caves

More local wildlife

We also managed to stumble upon the Man Mo Temple, a beautiful tribute to the God of Literature (Man) and the God of War (Mo).

The alters were full of offerings to the deities, some with fruit and some with packets of sweets.. A God isn’t gonna say no to a marshmallow!
This temple: sponsored by incense

This is definitely somewhere I’m glad we found and it’s absolutely worth a visit.

More incense and the God Rays seem pretty fitting!
Mo and Man..and sweets
High five Man!

There were a bit of mix between people there to worship (us) and those who were just a bit nosey, although we tried to pay our respects. There were also a few people doing routine upkeep on the temple, it seems to require a much more trained hand than the usual janitorial gig.

This was fascinating to see. James thinks his headphones might be telling him to not eat the paint, I think he’s listening to Metal.

Once we were incensed out our next stop was a spot of lunch, perhaps it’s a homing beacon but apparently we can find avocado toast anywhere in the world.

Don’t mind if we do
It was pretty fast and it was pretty gourmet but it was beautifully tasty

Refuelled, we continued on our journey to Nowhere in Particular and found ourselves on the travelator up the mountain. It gives good views of the street and a quick way to get to a new part of the city without actually having to walk up a hill, funny that.

This is popular for a reason

An ever present feature in Hong Kong is construction and possibly the most noteworthy things is the scaffolding. We all know it’s bamboo, but guys; it’s bamboo

No really, it’s bamboo
Nope

Coming up is another Green Interlude as we also happened upon Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens where we walked around some more green.

Looking at the green
This is also bamboo

We decided to walk back down (because gravity helps with that bit) and head to Victoria Harbour for our last stop of the day.

A trip on a Junk is definitely on the list

Today was a great glimpse into the city and everything it has to offer. We look forward to trying to squeeze in as much as we can over the next few days!
