Tokyo: Day 4

Day 4 in Tokyo and I think if one word could sum up today, it would have to be rain. Rain has been ever present today, sometimes just a bit of wet in the air, and other times bouncing off the pavement. But at all times: rain.

We started the day with optimism high that “It couldn’t rain all day, could it?” and with umbrella in tow “just in case” we headed off to the Tsukiji Fish Market..in the rain.  As we neared the market it became clear that a portion of the building had recently suffered a lot of fire damage, and while James was taking some photos we narrowly avoided appearing in the background of the news camera crews shot – the only other people around –  who were there reporting on it.

Bet our shot was better than the news crew’s anyway

Admittedly the largest fish market and tuna auction in the world really isn’t our scene but it’s interesting to see something so ingrained in Tokyo’s history, culture and trade.

Something smells…fishy…
No I’m alright thanks

We didn’t stick around too long however before heading off to the Hama-rikyu Gardens. They are a short walk from the market and an absolutely beautiful oasis of calm and green nestled in the surrounding urban area. For a small entry fee we were granted the all-access VIP too-cool-for-school basic entry to the park and we took full advantage.

A ticket with a “keepsake” stamp – I think we’ve both lost our tickets
300 year old pines need a helping stick or two

We wandered all the way round the park, this time only doing one lap but remained fairly lost throughout.

I could put something poetic here but these two photos make it look like we’re playing Hide and Seek
Marco?..Polo!
Such green

We even found some local wildlife!

Rare and beautiful specimen
More green

The morning had gotten away from us and it was time to start our daily expedition to find food. James had loaded in another place. And you’ve guessed it! We ate somewhere else. On our mosey round we’d been distracted by some of the other buildings

Just looking for a Blade Runner
There might be escaped replicants down there

So we stopped in at a little place on our way to the original destination. The menu was pretty pork heavy but we managed to find some stir fried veg, with rice and soup.

Small place; big portions
This kept us going all day, even without any pork

As we were devouring our lunch the rain had decided to come on pretty heavy and knowing we’d have no hope of seeing anything if we were to stick to our original plan and head up Tokyo Tower, we decided to try some art galleries instead.

Just a light shower

Turns out, a lot of galleries in Tokyo are closed on Tuesdays.

This is outside so they can’t close this!
Doraemon characters seemed popular despite the rain

We went a little off the beaten track and found a cool little complex of shops and galleries…most of which were closed but there were a few things open which were worth a look around. I’d like to go back and see more of the Roppongi District when more is open.

This little gallery was open
This one was not

After seeing what we could we both got tired of the rain and headed back to the hostel for a bit of a dry off and re-energise.

Precipitation got the best of us

Wanting to enjoy our last night in Tokyo we took full advantage and headed back to Roppingo where Brewdog Tokyo just so happens to be. We enjoyed a couple of Elvis Juice’s to toast our time in Tokyo.

When heading home we disembarked from the Metro a few stops early and enjoyed a wander through Tokyo by night.

Now we’re off to bed to get ready for another exciting day tomorrow!
