Bangkok > Bali

Our flight to Bali was so early we were back up out of bed before a lot of people had even gone to theirs! The drive through Bangkok at 2:30am was made more memorable by our taxi driver taking racing lines on the motorway and generally not stopping for no-one! We arrived at the airport unscathed and managed to get through check-in and all the other important steps before embarking an airplane fairly quickly.

Can you spot our yellow bags?
Airports are like a strange dimension: all similar, all big, all confusing, all have no good tea or coffee

Both of our flights to Bali (via Kualar Lumpur) were quick, easy and event free.

The view of the volcanoes popping up over the clouds was amazing

All we had left to do was to get through immigration and we’d be on our way to our hotel…

This is mostly just one very very long queue

2 hours later and we’d managed to surface on the other side of immigration! If you are the type of person who has a wheelie carry-on suitcase and you like to swing it around behind you like a badly hitched trailer or a heavy set of nunchucks: there is a special place in hell for you. It’s probably stood in a queue for eternity, right behind a similar person.

Our hotel is about an hour away from the airport, in the town of Ubud. It’s known for its arts and culture, and therefore, right up our street.

We arrived and waved goodbye to our friendly taxi driver and found the sign for our hotel easy peasy. However what was not easy peasy to find, was the hotel itself. The building right next to the sign for our hotel was very empty and up for lease. So having wandered down the lane next to it, which seemed to be someone’s house, we tried a couple more lanes. Getting slightly confused (and in my case worried our hotel didn’t exist) we were googling its location when a lovely local saw our need for help and stepped in, the couple confirmed to us that the hotel did exist and was down the first lane. With our new found confidence – and faith in humanity – we walked back the way we came..and directly into someone’s house. We backed back out pretty quickly but a small girl of about 9 had seen the two bedraggled strangers wander into her home and out again and must have recognised our need for help. She showed us the entrance to our hotel: a brightly lit little path on the very same lane. I’m not sure if that’s a fairly regular occurrence for her but if it is, she needs to get a commission!

Our hotel was worth the confusion though, the staff are lovely and so is the room, our terrace and the pool will certainly be put to good use.

After we’d checked in we realised that having been awake for about 20hours with nothing but airplane food, we needed to eat. So we ventured back out for something close by and tasty.

Pizza is always a strong choice
More super friendly locals, although I think my pizza had too many vegetables for her liking

Even through our travels and searches today I think it’s easy to say that we look forward to stopping here for the week and seeing more of beautiful Bali!

This was a sight for our sore eyes!
