Bali: Day 4

We woke up to another day in paradise, and a polite knock at the door telling us breakfast was ready and waiting. Offerings of food are an excellent thing to wake up to!

There’s always so much to do and see in and around Ubud that we decided to go for another walk, this one shorter than yesterday’s: the pool was calling. We had read up about a lovely walk and restaurant away from the roads of Ubud and so thought we’d try there.

Starting strong
Gotta stop and chat with the locals

We were armed with the knowledge that the entrance to the lane was slightly hidden and so dipped through some houses and down a lane. We had ignored the calls of “Hello, taxi today!” but in retrospect they may have been saying “Hello, wrong way!” as shortly thereafter we found ourselves at the end of a track by a river.

What? No! We went this way on purpose

Faced with turning back or crossing the bridge (a log) and climbing over the ridge we opted for the latter. The ridge led us smack bang into the middle of someones lovingly cultivated rice terraces and so we traversed it with care in order to reach our track.

I wasn’t trying to look like a cartoon criminal sneaking across someone’s rice terrace but alas…

Finally on the right path we wandered along through more wonderful countryside until we came upon our lunch spot.

This is a road

Sari Organik is a lovely little place and definitely worth the walk (even with a detour) the views as we munched away at lunch were magnificent.

Good view

Good view!

We were faced with a decision: Craft beer and small pizza, or no drink and big rice. I think it was easy to see what we went for.

Balinese Craft Beer!
Dreamin’ about mango beer

Stark craft beer is brewed in the northern mountains of Bali and we can confirm the Mango Ale is delicious and goes perfectly with pizza!

Not so small pizza

After lunch we were keen to continue our walk, our aversion to just going back the way we came meant we looked into another loop. The path here is lovely and quiet so we would enjoy a further walk through the fields.

It is however thirsty work and as if by magic, there was a man in a field selling coconuts. James started to head over to him and I followed suit quickly upon realising he had a dog.

It’s a fine art; machete-ing a coconut
Hello dog
I thought I’d made a new friend but I think the dog could just taste pizza

We were so enjoying our walk – coconut in hand – that we missed a turning and were figuring out how best to join the road when another lovely local saw our confusion and showed us back to the correct path. People here are so friendly and willing to help it surprises me everyday!

The views were – as always – good
Our trip to the correct path led us passed a man who was hand milling coconut wood
James with unmilled coconut
Although difficult to find, it was impossible to access by car or moped which meant uninterrupted walks

The sun was still out when we returned to the town and the hotel so we took a dip in the pool for the rest of the afternoon.

Ubud’s signature street; or walk of fame

Swimming is an excellent way of building up an appetite! Keen to try somewhere new for dinner we decided upon Sayuri Healing Food, another of the many veggie places in Ubud it was not far from our hotel. It was a really nice chilled out spot with friendly staff and delicious food.

Watermelon and basil juice; and a green tea with interesting teapot
We both opted for the Nurish-a-bowl: a feast for the eyes and the stomach!

I must admit, I was slightly sceptical about the predominantly raw food, normally preferring my evening dinner piping hot – however the mix of flavours was lovely and if that wasn’t enough, dessert won me over!

Chocolate and mint cake?! Yes please!

Full to the brim with food we returned to our room to sleep it off and wake up to another day.
