Bali: Day 3

As the week in Bali continues, we seem to have fallen into the closest we’ve had to a routine since we set off on the 10 of Aug. No early sunrise tours of temples this week, thankfully, but instead lots of exploring!

This particular exploration took us up Jl. Kajeng, a street that interestingly opted to resurface by offering up advertising opportunities for local businesses / a concrete chalk board for tourists. Each advert / memory, pictured below, makes up (and funds) portions of the road.

We are unsure if the advertiser got to pen their own advert, or it an artist handled the lot.
After 200m of road we hit the familiar uphill climb.
This car made it up the steep climb, but never made it back down…
After the sudden assent we reached a more gradual path bordered by rice fields!
Bins are always a welcome sight after the Tokyo fiasco. This one recommended drinking wine. #aloneorwithfriends
Glorious scenes, less that 1km North of Ubud.
Sometime you have to remind yourself that its real life and not CGI. #biblicalclouds
We came across clusters of dense greenery, the river their watering hole.
Moat, obstruction or handy bridge?!
Although the path began to drop away from the fields above, we popped up for air every now and then!
H. taking in the view.
The subtle terracing, essential for irrigation, gave an incredible depth to the views.
Our next driving experience?!
The track eventually lead to road, refreshing solid, but somewhat less serene!

After the quick 10km loop we wandered down the familiar (laundry) street as we had noted a nice cafe / restaurant tucked away behind beaded curtains. Owned and operated by two ladies, Wulan Vegetarian Warung, was a real treat. They grow a large amount of their own organic produce, and every dish is cooked up fresh with seasonal ingredients. I went for the ‘Hottie Spicy Tempeh’ and Hatti opted for the ‘Saucy Mushroom Noodles’. To drink we had the ‘Green Juice’ and the ‘Big Lemonade’.

Spicy Hottie Tempeh!
Big Lemonade!
Saucy Mushroom Noodles!

After all of that eating excitement we decided to get a couple of cookies to take away. Although H. firmly requested the chocolate brownie cookie, we ended up with the green tea and coconut cookie (pictured below)!

Green tea cookie? Surprisingly very good!
Locally roasted coffee, prepared on the steroid riddled cousin of the AeroPress!

We had a cookie, a coffee, then jumped straight into the pool. We have unanimously decided that an hour in a pool everyday would be wonderful!

Dinner was a buffet at Veggie Table, they had a great spread. Jackfruit curry, back left, Tofu marinated in a sun-dried tomato sauce, front right, among other wonderful things!

A good amount of variety!

After an appropriate number of trips up to the buffet trays, we wished the empty table farewell.

To process the day, we swam with our emotions during an evening dip in the pool. The water glistened, only illuminated by moonlight… and a 60W florescent bulb.

See you all tomorrow.

  1. Yes it’s a good idea when followed as it keeps streets clean. Unfortunately the other side of the lack of bins was seen in certain cities in South East Asia, where the absence of bins seemed to encourage people to just throw their litter anywhere, sadly including just being stuffed into trees.

  2. I do like that the idea of litter responsibility being totally given to the litter owner. Firstly it keeps streets very clean. Secondly it probably saves councils money in not having to work so hard to clean up street litter. It is the countryside code we have here but in towns and cities. Take your litter home!
