Adelaide

We awoke in Boroota Bush Camping Park, as expected. Thankfully we hadn’t been relocated in our sleep… by aliens, a local removal service, or territorial ducks. After many a dream about Rodeo clowns, or Rodeo protection athletes (as is politically correct), we dusted ourselves off and clambered back into the Saab braced for a bumpy drive back to the main road. Buckaroo.

We headed into Adelaide for a couple of nights in a hotel, thank baby Jesus, as we explored the city and its suburbs. Our hotel, The Princes Lodge Motel, was located in North Adelaide a mostly residential part of Adelaide surrounded in parkland, sports fields and botanical gardens. Sounds pretty idyllic, it was, good job Adelaide town planners. 👏

Palatial in plan.
The Princes Lodge Motel, clearly a remodelled stately home.
The stationary bike attraction, not bike rack, definitely not a bike rack.
A flower, presumably.
O’Connell Street was home to an Art Deco theatre called the Piccadilly. We did not go in…

Instead we did our usual and hit up a local Italian and sampled a couple of their pizzas. 6/8 Café Palazzo, the base was a little bizarre… but the toppings were spot on!

Sure bonus spinach is welcomed!
Pumpkin on a pizza?! Actually, yes please. 8/8
Chemtrails? Unlikely. More likely condensation.
After the pizza we were feeling a little weckish (wine + peckish?). Organic? Why not.
Quaint houses…
…on quiet leafy streets.

We took our first jaunt into the city centre, our first destination, the fabled botanical gardens.

An abundance of greenery!
H. dressed to impress!
St. Peter’s Cathedral was on route!
As was Adelaide Oval, home to many a cricket / Australia rules football match!
As we neared our destination we were lucky enough to catch a little bit of cricket action!
Hanging bats!
During the weekend the botanical gardens are home to many a wedding.
The pond in the Waterlily Pavilion!
The ‘Dead House’, a relic of the former Asylum that shared the botanical garden site, is now a tool shed.
H. happily watching ducks!
Palm house, a greenhouse filled with… Palms.
Gardened out we ventured deeper into the centre to grab some lunch.
Ambient music was provided by flip flop tub man… officially known as Pipe Guy.

He has a YouTube channel for those interesting!

The Christmas decorations threw us a little, but yes it was approaching Christmas!

The above is possibly good inspiration for H’s folks Cathie & George who have been designing and manufacturing Christmas decorations, particularly reindeer.

Lunch was beetroot hummus and bread outside the Art Gallery of Southern Australia.

Keen to see what was on offer in the gallery we wondered in and were nicely surprised by the range of artworks on show!

We were lucky enough to catch the last day of ‘Paolo Sebastian: X’, a label launched by designer Paul Vasileff. Below are a selection of his works.

Unfortunately I couldn’t see myself in any of the dresses…
Wall of mirrors!
A balloon person cast in bronze!
A social / political statement about Indonesia… apparently.
Inside / Outside?
Ouch.
Needless to say H. really enjoyed the selection!
Bubbles?
McDonalds in the apocalypse?
Aerodynamic chair?
Upside down tree.

Finally we made it out! Significantly art-ed out we decided to explore a little further around Adelaide and most importantly find a destination for dinner!

We were very tempted to plunge into various water features on route to cool off!
An interesting bark formation!
A little peak of Victoria Square!
‘No, our Christmas tree is bigger!’
We are always on the look out for interesting street art!
We settled on catching a Mexican, which paired nicely with a couple Corona!
Corona in hand, we watched the city go by from the balcony!
The burrito and enchilada arrived! They did not disappoint, thank you Guzman Y Gomez!

Locally known as the cheese grater, the SAHMRI is a medical research facility.
We wandered back to our hotel through leafy North Adelaide.
With the sun setting we said goodnight to Adelaide!

We had a great city break in Adelaide, it was nice to segment the journey and give ourself the treat of an actual mattress for a couple of nights…! Onwards and Eastwards, see you all next time for more Aus!

  1. The art gallery is fantastic. I love the aerodynamic chair. Was it part of an airplane ?
You both look healthy and brown xx

  2. Wow! Upside down bats, pumpkin on pizza, dreamy dresses and lilac in December. Think I rather like Adelaide!
